The Science of Cosmetic dentistry has seen a rise with the celebrity culture and the world’s general appetite for improving one’s exterior appearance, as well as one’s internal appearance. Whereas once we had traditional dentistry, cosmetic dentistry refers to the recent application of practices like teeth whitening, tooth reshaping, veneers and gum-lifts. These can’t necessarily improve one’s health of the teeth, but just the look of them. Cosmetic dentistry sometimes is put  in to the same group as cosmetic surgery, but most cosmetic dentistry is done and sometimes encouraged by normal dentists. But it can sometimes be very expensive.

Cosmetic dentistry can range from small modifications to regular practices (such as using a white colored material instead of regular gray mercury/metal mixtures for fillings), to full mouth reshaping, coloring and veneering.

A more common cosmetic dentistry procedure is teeth whitening. After a general visit, the dentist may just provide toothpaste plus whitener to lighten the teeth and small grits to help scrape away any stains. For medium discolorment that goes deeper in to the tooth enamel one can be given a peroxide paste that is put on with a mouth guard for a few minutes occasionally to whiten the tooth on the inside, but in more serious cases they may be given advanced treatment.

Veneering is common form of cosmetic dentistry. If a person has an accident, chipped or uneven teeth, applying a porcelain veneer (like a cap) on top of the tooth/teeth in cosmetically rebuilds the teeth for a great look. They are not false teeth, just additions to your normal teeth.

Although cosmetic dentistry is increasing, dentists still advise that it in no way replaces the need for good oral hygiene.
